The Kenya National Farmers’ Federation (KENAFF), in partnership with the Andreas Hermes Akademie (AHA), organized training of facilitators on leadership module 2, step one workshop, which took place from 4th to 7th April, at the Farmers Conference Center to strengthen a leadership development programme that reaches all KENAFF levels through a peer-to-peer approach.
The three-day event, facilitated by Mr. George Cottina and Mr. Charles Muburi, attracted over 25 participants from across the country. It focused on the technical contents of leading teams. The aim was to provide the facilitators with the knowledge and skills to deliver team leadership training for the KENAFF farmer leaders.
The facilitators took the participants through the following key learning areas:
- Bridging from module one by reflecting on the experiences that the facilitators have made so far and discussing implications for module two.
- Revisiting the triangle of leadership and introduction to working together in teams
- Sharing participants’ case studies and experiences
- Understanding what teams are and how teams differ from other groupings of people and the role of leadership in team development.
- Understanding how teams develop through learning models for team development and relating them to the development of teams in the context of farmer organizations
- Sharing on and learning fundamental techniques in leading teams (such as team communication and conflict management)
- Reflection on team challenges in farmer organization and how the participants could use the main learning on leading teams to address these challenges
The leadership training of facilitators (TOF) is modelled on the AHA CET concept and comprises three modules, with each module requiring three steps to complete. Module 1 aims to strengthen self-leadership, module 2 aims to enhance team leadership, and module 3 aims to improve leading towards organizational goals.
Each module has three steps:
Step one: focuses on content and equipping the TOTs with the content on the leadership they will be transferring to their targets.
Step two: focuses on the theory of session planning and mock practice to help contextualize and internalize the sessions.
Step three: focuses on preparing the TOF to transfer the knowledge and includes test training with live audiences. The third step is also used to assess and evaluate the TOFs.
