Capacity Building: Why it matters?

The capacity building focuses on increasing an individual and organization’s abilities to perfom core functions, solve problems, and objectively deal with development needs to implement their functions and achieve goals over time. Capacity building is essential at all levels, from individuals, groups and national organizations (Horton, 2002). Capacity building is recognized as a must for grassroots and global organizations to achieve sustainable development (Sessions, 1993).

Last year, KENAFF successfully conducted the grassroots elections culminating with County Annual General Meetings, where nominations for KENAFF nationals were held. As a result, KENAFF now has many fresh leaders at all levels. It is essential that these leaders are inducted into KENAFF and have their leadership capacities enhanced and built to be of great value to the farmers they represent and KENAFF as a whole over the next three years.

Past KENAFF Capacity building workshop, Module 2, step two: Theory of Session Planning and Facilitation. The workshop focused on equipping the facilitators to train KENAFF grassroots leaders (county, sub-county, and ward levels) on leading teams.

Growing KENAFF as a formidable and the ultimate Farmers’ Voice in Kenya requires long- term capacity building, engagements and skills, especially at the grassroots. KENAFF appreciates and believes that her revitalization, strengthening and sustainability are dependent on having a solid farmer leadership cadre at all levels.

Growing KENAFF as a formidable and the ultimate Farmers’ Voice in Kenya requires long-term capacity building, engagements and skills, especially at the grassroots.

To this end, KENAFF partnered with her strategic partner Andreas Hermes Akademie (AHA) to develop a leadership development programme -KENAFF Capacity Building Programme, which started in June 2021. KENAFF employed a Training of Facilitators (TOF) approach that involved training and coaching of trainers who, after assessment, shall undertake the leadership training at all levels.

The facilitators underwent rigorous training which involved three steps:

Step I – focused on equipping the facilitators with content on leadership;

Step II – focused on the theory of session planning;

Step III – focused on preparing the facilitators to transfer the knowledge.

Ultimately, it is expected that these facilitators shall support the reawakening, revitalizing and strengthening of KENAFF at the grassroots level through leadership development for KENAFF leaders.

The main objective of the KENAFF Capacity Building Programme is to enhance the leadership capacity of all KENAFF leaders at all levels (county, sub-county and ward), to deliver their mandate effectively in service to KENAFF members’ and Kenyan farmers’ in general and their role in supporting the Kenya National Farmers’ Federation.
