Farmers across the country are facing numerous challenges with the ongoing distribution of subsidized fertilizers by the national government. KENAFF stands with the farmers and demands urgent action from the government to address these issues.

Some of the challenges reported by farmers include delayed fertilizers, limited access to NCPB stores, lack of communication, and availability of only one type of fertilizer. These issues have made it difficult for farmers to access the fertilizers they need to improve their yields and livelihoods.

It’s heartbreaking to hear that farmers in Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties have to travel long distances to collect and transport fertilizers due to few or no nearby NCPB stores. This is not acceptable, and the government needs to do better.

The lack of proper communication has also resulted in farmers not receiving fertilizers as anticipated. Farmers in Baringo have allegedly resorted to bribing officials in stores to buy fertilizers. This is not only frustrating but also adds an unnecessary burden on farmers who are already struggling to make ends meet.

The availability of only one type of fertilizer, DAP, is also affecting potato farmers who had anticipated a variety as directed by the government. This is unacceptable, and the government needs to listen to farmers and provide them with fertilizers they need to improve their yields.

The lack of proper verification of farmers during the registration process has led to unscrupulous traders and middlemen getting access to the subsidized fertilizers at the expense of the target farmers. It is even worse that these traders and middlemen then sell these fertilizers to farmers at exorbitant prices, further exacerbating the challenges already faced by farmers.

This is unacceptable and disheartening that genuine farmers who are meant to benefit from the subsidized fertilizers are left without any support.

KENAFF urges the government to urgently address these challenges and ensure that the distribution of subsidized fertilizers is done in a transparent and efficient manner. Genuine farmers should be the top priority, and the government must ensure that fertilizers reach them directly without the involvement of middlemen or unscrupulous traders.
