About Us: KENYA NATIONAL FARMERS' FEDERATION (KENAFF)
Who We Are: KENYA NATIONAL FARMERS' FEDERATION (KENAFF)
The Kenya National Farmers’ Federation (KENAFF) is the apex, umbrella farmers’ organization in Kenya;
also known as the National Farmers’ Organization (NFO). It was founded in 1946 in Nakuru as the Kenya National
Farmers Union (KNFU). KENAFF is a non-political, not-for-profit and democratic membership-based organization.
The federation’s core mandate is to represent, articulate, promote and protect the interests of Kenyan through lobby,
advocacy, policy action and farmer empowerment.
This mandate is embodied in the KENAFF motto: The Farmers’ Voice/ Sauti ya
Mkulima; operationalized through an elaborate organizational structure—ward, sub-county, county and the national levels).
As well, the structure incorporates three national councils: Youth, Women and Commodities.
The
federation’s County Boards, National Councils (Youth, Women and Commodities), The National Farmers Assembly
(NFA) and the Annual General Meeting (AGM) provide leadership and policy articulation. The secretariat is in-charge of
execution and day-to-day running of the federation’s member services outlay, programming and operationalization of
planning frameworks. In the discharge of these duties, the secretariat is supported by a national network of county offices.
To achieve her core mandate, offer specific and generalized services to her members and support
the country's development objectives, KENAFF is both catalyst and mediator of farmers' uptake of progressive
agricultural development innovations. Mainly, this is operationalized through lobby, advocacy and policy action.
The federation also deploys a wide range of member services: capacity building on organizational development for
farmer groups/associations/enterprises; technical advisory and market facilitation; and, facilitating linkages between
farmers and credit and finance institutions
The KENAFF membership comprises smallholder farmers organized in Producer Business Groups (PBGs);
County Farmers Associations (CFAs); apex Commodity Associations (CAs) Cooperative Societies; Farmers’
Unions; farmer-owned business entities; and, large-scale producers.
The current membership is approximately
1.6 million farm families spread across all the 47 counties and the eleven (11) KENAFF regions.
Given the primacy of the agricultural sector in Kenya, KENAFF is a critical cog in the country’s
socioeconomic transformation and development as envisaged in the Big Four Agenda (2018—2022); Agricultural
Sector Transformation and Growth Strategy (ASTGS, 2019—2029); Kenya Vision 2030; and, the United Nations
