KENAFF is implementing a ten-year Farm Forestry and Afforestation Programme (KENAFF FF&AP), 2021-2030 as one component of Pillar 5 (Farmer-driven climate action and resilience building against shocks and emergencies) in the context of the federation’s strategic plan, 2022 – 2026. Over the 2021-2030 period, KENAFF intends to mobilize all farmers in the country’s 47 counties; and as many other stakeholders as possible to plant, grown and nurture 10 billion trees. 

The federation is committed to deliver this promise not only to support the Government of Kenya’s target for 10% forest cover; but also, to entrench the ethos of the care for and protection of our common heritage – the natural capital – that is on loan to us by posterity; enhance biodiversity conservation; promote the tree value chain in Kenya; and, enhance farmers’ livelihoods. 

To operationalize this, KENAFF shall be holding national tree planting exercises twice a year, guided by the onset of the March – April – May (MAM) rainfall cycle and the onset of the October – November – December (OND) rainfall cycle. 

Along with planting and nurturing trees, KENAFF shall also mobilize and organize all Kenyan farmers to focus on sustainable land management practices; sustainable water conservation and management practices; conservation of biodiversity; green energy (including biogas and solar); the development of a sustainable tree value chain in Kenya; Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES); and, many other Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) related technologies, innovations and management practices (TIMPs). 

We are guided by this precept: planting the right tree, in the right place and for the right reason. The trees we plant and care for shall have this mix: 50% (indigenous), 30% (fruit and fodder) and 20% (fast-maturing).
