Strengthening Farmer Organization in Africa Programme inception workshop

The Federation has been implementing SFOAP program through EAFF support. It held an inception workshop during which a market and membership satisfaction survey report were presented and validated.

The workshop brought together 15 farmers from project implementing counties (Kiambu, Nakuru and Narok), 6 staff members, 2 consultants and 2 representatives from EAFF.Key challenge singled out in the report was low potato productivity amongst Kenyan farmers with small scale farmers recording 6-7 tons per ha while their counter parts larger scale farmers recording 10-14 tons per ha below the potential average of 16-20 tons per ha and below average production of 16 tons per ha. The low productivity was attributed to unavailability of certified seed and inappropriate application of agro-chemicals especially fertilizer. Other challenges included unorganized market systems and inadequate post harvest handling infrastructures resulting in price fluctuation of between Kenya shillings 400 to 3000 per 67-80 Kgs.

Farmers recommendations was to increase training on positive seed selection and monitoring /supervision of seed multipliers

Lessons from Rwanda were shared with the farmers who were able to see opportunities in organizing themselves for targeted markets and engaging in simple value addition activities such as cleaning, grading, packaging and labeling.
